Big Beach and The Kings Trail

We drove south for the day today. We went to Big Beach at Makena State Park. It was spectacular. Such a fun beach. Crystal blue water, soft yellow sand, crashing waves. We had fish tacos from the food truck at the parking lot for lunch. We only meant to stay a couple hours but everyone was having so much fun we stayed almost the whole day there. Snorkelling was good, Mark saw a lot of fish. We all bailed while body surfing; surfacing covered head to toe in sand, salty sea foam and smiles.

The next stop was at La Perouse Bay. We drove to the end of the road and pulled over. By this time we had had a lot of sun and the lava flows were super hot with no shade so we didn't make it too far on the the trail. But even still it was a gorgeous hike. The kings trail has that name because it was used as a path around the island used by the hawaiian king and his guards to monitor the villages around the island. Apparently they used to walk the trail in barefeet! ouch! It was super hot and we were tired, but it was totally worth the visit. Extremely scenic and other-worldly.

Back in Kahana now, heading up-country tomorrow. Aloha!
